Steve Rogers will return in “Avengers: Doomsday.”
At least, that’s what text at the end of a teaser trailer for the upcoming Marvel sequel told moviegoers on Thursday. The first teaser for “Avengers: Doomsday” — which will be hitting theaters exactly one year from Thursday — was shown before screenings of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” which premieres this weekend, Variety reported. The teaser has not yet been released online.
The teaser trailer centers around Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), the former Captain America who, at the end of “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, passed on his shield to Sam Wilson and returned to the past to find his lost love, Peggy Carter.
In the trailer, Steve is seen riding on a motorcycle to the house he shares with Peggy, according to USA Today. Once at the house, he’s seen picking up his old Captain America suit and then holding a baby — likely his child with Peggy.
The teaser ends with the words “Steve Rogers will return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’” and a countdown clock to the film’s release date, per USA Today.
Is Chris Evans in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?
“Avengers: Doomsday” will mark Evans’ first return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers since his role in “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. Fans have speculated about whether Evans (and Steve) would return in the future, though Evans has frequently downplayed those rumors.
He even went so far as to deny that he was returning in “Doomsday” earlier this year, telling Entertainment Weekly in January, “It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible, and I’m sure it’s going to be that much harder when it comes out and you feel like you weren’t invited to the party.”
However, this isn’t the first time that Evans will be returning to Marvel post-“Endgame” — he made a brief appearance as Johnny Storm, who he previously played in the “Fantastic Four” franchise, in “Deadpool & Wolverine” in 2024.
What do we know about ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?
Another past Marvel star will be returning for the blockbuster film — Robert Downey Jr., who, after his character Tony Stark heroically sacrificed himself at the end of “Avengers: Endgame,” will be playing the villainous Dr. Doom.
The film will boast a massive cast, including Anthony Mackie as the current Captain America, Sam Wilson; Chris Hemsworth as Thor; “Thunderbolts” stars Sebastian Stan and Florence Pugh; “Fantastic Four” stars Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby; as well as Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, Letitia Wright, Channing Tatum, and “X-Men” stars Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
It will also feature the return of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who also directed “Endgame.” The Russos have shared a couple of cryptic hints about “Doomsday” on social media, including what appears to be a set photo in September, and a countdown clock that they shared on Thursday.
When does ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ come out?
“Avengers: Doomsday” will be coming to theaters Dec. 18, 2026. A sequel to “Doomsday,” “Avengers: Secret Wars,” will follow on Dec. 17, 2027.
